Urban Operations have been publishing skyscraper zines since 2006 as a critical research project that explores and interrogates the cultural experience of the modernist skyscraper and the role it plays in contemporary urbanism in the City of Los Angeles. ‘While the visual effects of LA’s collection of vertical architecture may be traced back to the material systems and programmatic logics of Post-War Modernism, the city’s undeniable preference towards horizontal field conditions makes the skyscraper an exceptional and poignant area of study.’

PROPOSALS is a series of projects related to built environments and building culture written, designed and published by Nene Tsuboi. It presents architectural thoughts and proposals from a non-architect's perspective. The first issue, published in 2010, looked at houses and homes. The second issue is about ideas and thoughts generated while making Kultuurisauna, a public sauna on the Helsinki waterfront designed with her partner Tuomas Toivonen. The scale of the publication doubles as the number grows.

Launched in 2007, Loofy Magazin is an ongoing project in the form of a periodical magazine focusing on ‘anecdotal accounts provided or triggered by terrestrial landscapes, its natural and built environment as well as the entanglement of both agents.’ Initially based on expeditions and field trips into urban and rural landscapes the magazine worked in the spirit of a travel log book, capturing phenomenon and occurrences of specific sites through the combination of text and images. The project has since broadened in approach and style, which has varied as submission material from contributors like artists, designers, architects, historians, theorists, philosophers, bloggers and journalists has been included.

The publication by Anna M. Szaflarski takes the form of a set of architectural blue prints, which track the formal details of existing structures which lack bureaucratic or official status. Published by AKV Berlin Publishing it seeks to describe ‘the battle between the living city and the abstract parallel world of city archives, which convey the illusion of order and control. The structures drafted are found, existing objects and are selected because they suggest being built on a whim; using little professional building knowledge, and appear to fulfill a simple task, which is assumedly is defined by the builder.’ The first issue consists of 9 folded posters of technical drawings for a small shack in Berlin pieced together using found, discarded or readily available material.

A4 is an occasional pamphlet that addresses Dublin’s architectural and built environment and its relationship to politics, economics and the social realm. It takes the form of an A4 poster, folder into an 8-page zine. The first issue focused on urban proposals for the Liberties area of Dublin and was distributed to local residents to encourage public engagement. ‘A4 is a response to the city in which we live and we chose the format for its clarity and flexibility.’

Tyrannus is a newspaper on style and interior design published in Buenos Aires since 2009. Edited by architect Marina Zuccon, it addresses the issue of decoration, often relegated to the margins of architecture. ‘Rather than displaying interiors as settings for ideals of lifestyle, decoration and even existence, Tyrannus attempts to reveal the dirty, contingent and variable side of inhabiting in order to formulate, in conjunction with a re-categorization of styles, a reflection on urban life, architecture, urbanity and contemporary urbanism.’ The forth issue reflects on the current condition of Mar del Plata, an Argentine beach resort that was exclusive in the 1960s.

The Draftery is a project curated by Jesen Tanadi to showcase architectural drawings by little-known architects, artists, students, and other practitioners. ‘It is a place to see and read about how drawings are actually made – how a practitioner’s personal reasoning develops a distinct drawing process.’ The Draftery initiated as an online digital library and the biannual publication – edited in Providence, Rhode Island, USA and published by Booklet in Tokyo, Japan ¬– that presents a more in depth examination of a smaller selection of images.

Published bimonthly, PISEAGRAMA: Periodic Public Space is distributed for free throughout Brazil under a Creative Commons License. The magazine is dedicated to public space, both existing and imagined, and relies on essays, short texts, images, videos or hybrid works in order to approach contemporary culture from different angles. It aims to broaden the transformative power of art and architecture and inject imagination into politics. ‘The third issue presents non-technicist and non-functionalist occupations of public space, playing and playful practices, pauses and breaks in space and time, the (im)possibilities of childhood in the city, records of collective experiences and memories.’
